The L.A. Times Guild Latino Caucus Open House
February 6 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
My name’s Jessica Martinez and I’m a homepage editor at the Los Angeles Times. I’m also a community liaison with the L.A. Times Guild’s Latino Caucus, so I’m reaching out with the hope that your students can join us next weekend for a Zoom event.
Here’s more on that: Last year, the caucus crafted a series of goals intended to increase diversity in our newsroom and improve coverage of Latino communities. One of those goals is to build bridges with local colleges and universities to start nurturing the next generation of journalists.
To that end, the Latino Caucus is holding a virtual open house on Saturday, Feb. 6 from noon to 3 p.m. This is an opportunity for students interested in journalism to meet Times staffers from across the newsroom, hear about their work, and ask questions. We hope that you can help us get the word out to students at your school.
The event is free and open to any student who is interested. They just have to register with their respective .edu account. There are eight panels and over 30 journalists involved.
Students can use this link to register and check out the tentative schedule.
Thanks so much and we hope to see your students there! Please feel free to share this information with all students — the more the merrier! — and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions about this event and/or in the future. One of my personal goals is to strengthen the relationship between local colleges and The Times.
Best, Jessica Martinez
Note: Thanks to El Camino College’s Kate McLaughlin for forwarding this.
“Jessica Martinez is a former El Camino J student and editor-in-chief of The Union and Warrior Life,” McLaughlin wrote in an email. “We owe her a great debt of gratitude for her hard work in putting this all together and making sure those that came after her have a chance to work with and be noticed by the LAT.”
