How to create an engaging remote newsroom

Bonding, collaboration and community are part of what makes our physical newsrooms so special and keeps students returning from one semester to the next. How do we capture that in an online-only environment, especially when many of the students have never met F2F before? In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn different tools and activities to bring some of the magic of your real newsrooms to your online ones. You’ll leave this workshop with:

  • At least 4 tools you can implement in your fall courses
  • Hands-on engagement
  • A list of considerations and possible solutions
  • A group brainstorm for making sure our newsroom thrive in the fall, despite shelter-in-place orders

Remote fall 2020: Ready or not?

So many challenges:

  • Teaching synchronous or asynchronous classes?
  • Meeting and training new students in cyberspace instead of in the classroom or lab.
  • Fostering teamwork among remote editors.
  • Encouraging high-quality reporting on COVID-19, racial justice, the 2020 election and the usual (but unusual) campus stories.
  • Planning a high-quality merged JACC student conference for fall.
  • Staying sane.

In this workshop, we’ll bring together the best ideas from this two-day training, and start a discussion about JACC going forward: Contests, conferences, happy hours and more!

11:00 a.m. - 11:55 a.m.
Facilitator:  Maryanne Shults
Moderator/Panel Leader:  Karyn Bower
Panel members: MacKenzie Quinn, James Duffy

What your students need to be successful “mojo” reporters

Today's journalists have to do it all and the simplest and easiest tool is right in your pocket—your smartphone. You can record interviews, take photos, shoot video B-roll, and finally edit and publish online—all from one device.  Saddleback College's Professor Karyn Bower will share tips and tools for today's mobile journalist, or "mojo."  Two former JACC students will share their stories as well as answer questions.

MacKenzie Quinn attended Saddleback College, first serving at the EIC for Lariat, then moving into video/broadcast journalism. She transferred to Cal State Fullerton where she was a reporter with both Al Dia, where the team reported from the Mexico/U.S. border and won an Emmy, as well as OC News. She is currently a multimedia journalist, working for NBC Montana.

James Duffy started at Citrus College as a re-entry student after earning a degree from Loyola Marymount, focusing on political science and philosophy. While at Citrus, he was the EIC for the Clarion as well as the Student Representative for the JACC Board. He has several certificates in leadership skills and training.  Most recently, he covered the #BLM protests in Los Angeles.
